Former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke will be facing at least one other Democrat in the race for governor next year, with a new candidate filing for the ballot this week.
According to the Texas Secretary of State’s office, former reporter Joy Diaz has filed to run for the Democratic nomination for governor. Diaz is a former radio reporter for KUT in Austin and a former guest host of the widely-popular Texas news program, Texas Standard, which airs on public radio stations across the state.
Diaz will be facing O’Rourke in the March Democratic primary for governor. A third candidate in the race, Houston-area educator Deirdre Gilbert, withdrew from the race this week.
Candidates have until Monday to file for spots on the ballot. The primary Election Day is March 1, 2022.
