Abbott Draws Seven Primary Challengers for 2022 Election

Gov. Greg Abbott will face seven opponents in his primary bid for re-election next year.

According to filings with the Republican Party of Texas, Abbott will face seven challengers in his primary campaign for re-election, including several well-known statewide politicians. Former State Sen. Don Huffines, former Texas Republican Party chairman Allen West, comedian Chad Prather, philanthropist Kandy Kaye Horn, businessman Danny Harrison, attorney Paul Belew, and activist Rick Perry will be on the ballot to oppose Abbott next year.

The filing of Perry especially drew attention on Monday, due to the candidate’s name being similar to that of former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The Perry who filed for the ballot is not the same person as the former Governor, but is instead a conservative activist from North Texas.

On the Democratic side, former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke will face a number of opponents for his party’s nomination for statewide office. Opposing O’Rourke will be former journalist Joy Diaz, automotive executive Michael Cooper, retiree Inno Barrientez, veteran Star Locke, and engineer Rich Wakeland.

The primary elections will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.
