A documentary detailing Amarillo musician Hayden Pedigo’s campaign for the Amarillo City Council in 2019 has been selected for the 2021 SXSW Film Festival.
Kid Candidate, directed by Jasmine Stodel, tells the story of Pedigo’s bid for the City Council last election cycle and the spoof campaign commercial that went viral and launched his campaign. Pedigo sought election to the Place 1 seat on the City Council against incumbent Elaine Hays and challengers Jay Kirkman and Richard Herman, winning 2,089 votes, and placing second in the four-person contest.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Pedigo thanked those behind the production of the film and hailed it as “an incredible piece of Amarillo history.”
“This film is genuinely amazing and I think it’s the best portrayal of Amarillo I have ever seen,” Pedigo said. “Thank you to Gunpowder & Sky/Jude Harris/Van Toffler for taking a chance on this story and a huge huge thank you to director Jasmine Stodel who made this incredible piece of Amarillo history. Also, thanks to the countless others that invested so much time in order for this documentary to become a reality.”
The documentary will be shown in its world premiere as part of SXSW’s Documentary Feature Competition. For information about SXSW, visit https://www.sxsw.com/.
