When voters step into the booth to cast a ballot for Amarillo City Council, Place 2, they will have the option to choose between three candidates offering very different visions for Amarillo.

Incumbent Freda Powell has expressed her pro-tax nature through numerous votes for tax increases during the past four years of her tenure. Additionally, as a supporter of taxpayer-funded lobbying and the $275 million bond issue pushed by the City Council last fall, Powell has shown that her priorities often lead to rising tax bills for all of Amarillo.

Challenger Joe West has great ideas for the city and should be a viable candidate in future elections in Amarillo. If Mr. West does not win this year, it should be hoped that he will eventually find a spot where he can serve Amarillo taxpayers in some other capacity.

Then, voters have the option of Jason Foglesong, a conservative career educator who was at the forefront of the battle to defeat the City Council’s bond election last year. Throughout his previous run for congress and during this campaign, Foglesong has shown he is unafraid of standing up to groups like Amarillo Matters PAC and will fight for lower taxes and smaller government.

Our Publisher’s Committee believes the choice is clear in this race.

We recommend Jason Foglesong for Amarillo City Council, Place 2.

Early voting runs April 19-27. Election Day is May 1.
