Gov. Greg Abbott has drawn another primary challenger for 2022, this time from a well-known former elected official.

Former State Sen. Don Huffines announced on Monday that he will challenge Abbott in the 2022 Republican primary for governor. Huffines, who served in the State Senate from 2015 until 2019, announced his campaign by saying “Texas deserves actual Republican leadership that will act urgently and decisively.”

In a Facebook video released by his campaign, Huffines outlined his top priorities as securing the border and finishing the border wall, eliminating property taxes, and protecting Texans’ votes. Huffines also said that if elected, he will not accept a salary or government benefits.

Huffines joins Abbott and stand up comic and talk show host Chad Prather in the race for Governor on the Republican side. While there is still plenty of time for other candidates to enter the race, the primary election is currently scheduled for early March, barring any unexpected delays due to redistricting.
