Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson’s re-election victory in the May 1 election was finalized on Tuesday, as the results of a recount showed the incumbent hanging on to her majority to avoid a runoff election.
On Tuesday, Amarillo city manager Jared Miller confirmed that the results of the mayoral race recount showed 10 new or misplaced votes added to the tally for the total votes cast in the race. Of those ten votes, seven votes went to Michael Hunt, while two votes each went to Nelson and former paralegal Claudette Smith. The fourth candidate in the race, architect Carl Karas, lost a vote in the final recount tally.
The recount was requested by Smith, who placed second in the race, with 29 percent of the vote, according to unofficial numbers. Those same results also showed Nelson winning 54 percent of the vote, which gave her more than the minimum number of votes needed to avoid a runoff.
As far as the logistics of the runoff are concerned, Miller praised those involved with the recount process and said the final cost of the recount has not yet been revealed, although Smith had already paid a $4,500 deposit to begin the process.
Nelson’s victory will be certified when the recounted numbers are canvassed during the next meeting of the Amarillo City Council.
