Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson filed to officially seek re-election on Friday.

On Friday, the Amarillo City Secretary’s office announced that Nelson had filed to seek re-election. Nelson’s filing means the former Amarillo Economic Development Corporation board chair and attorney will be seeking her third term in office. Nelson was previously re-elected with about 64 percent of the vote in 2019, which marked a 16-point drop in support from her first election in 2017.

Nelson joined local catering company owner Michael Hunt on the ballot in the race for mayor. Hunt, owner of Michael’s Barbeque Shack, filed his application to run for mayor on the first day of candidate filings earlier this month. Hunt is running on a platform of bringing common-sense business experience back to the City Council.

Also, on Friday, paralegal Claudette Smith filed for the ballot, making a second run at challenging Nelson after unsuccessfully running for the office last cycle.

Candidates have until Friday, February 12 to file for a spot on the ballot. Election Day is May 1.
