Former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman has filed the paperwork to launch a bid to unseat Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in next year’s statewide primary election.

According to the Texas Tribune, Guzman filed her treasurer appointment on Friday to challenge Paxton in next year’s Republican primary for Attorney General. Guzman filed the paperwork just days after tendering her surprise resignation from the Texas Supreme Court.

With Guzman now expected to join the race, Paxton will face at least two primary challengers next year in a field that will also include incumbent Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who announced his candidacy for Paxton’s seat earlier this month.

Outside of the Republican primary field, former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski has launched a campaign for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General, while Dallas attorney Lee Merritt has also announced his candidacy for the job. Merritt has not yet specified which party’s nomination he will seek in 2022.
