West Texas A&M University and its Department of Education are a partnering sponsor of the 25th annual Region 16 Literacy Institute.
The conference will run July 20 and 21 at Region 16, 5800 S. Bell St. in Amarillo, and will provide learning opportunities for area educators through a variety of breakout sessions and keynote addresses by Newberry Medal-winning author Matt de la Pena (“Ball Don’t Lie”) and literacy consultant and author Renee Houser (“What Do I Teach Readers Tomorrow”).
“Elementary and secondary participants will be motivated and inspired by our guest speakers and session leaders,” said Allison Silvertooth, Region 16 education specialist and conference organizer. “We want teachers to collect strategies and best practices in teaching literacy, language and writing to engage students in lifelong literacy practices.”
WT is sponsoring the event as part of its ongoing outreach to regional school districts, said Dr. Betty Coneway, chair of WT’s Graduate Literacy Education Program.
WT prepares more than 75 percent of the educators in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and enjoys a strong collaborative relationship with area school districts, Coneway said.
“We also want to make sure teachers throughout the region know about the 10 graduate programs available through WT’s College of Education and Social sciences and our doctoral degree in educational leadership, most of which can be fully completed online,” Coneway said.
