From bouncy inflatables and a rock-climbing wall to free food and fun giveaways, National Night Out will be a frolicking celebration to remember at Amarillo College.

The AC Police Department will host the family friendly event from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 along 22nd Street on the Washington Street Campus. It is free and open to the public.

The event, which will also feature exhibits and instruction on bike safety, fire prevention and more, is being conducted in conjunction with National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

“We love the idea of building bridges and strengthening our ties with the community,” AC Police Chief Scott Acker said. “Police and their neighbors shouldn’t have to come together only in times of emergency; we can have fun together, too.”

Acker said that while hotdogs and popsicles will be distributed for free, some food trucks also will be on hand for those who want to purchase different fare. There also will be an area set aside for chalk drawing, and kids are encouraged to bring their bicycles and take a jaunt through a coned-off bike-safety course.

Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide, generally on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.
