Special Amarillo City Council Meeting Set for Friday Afternoon

The City of Amarillo has announced a special meeting of Amarillo City Council will take place on Friday at 4:30 pm. The meeting is a follow-up to yesterday’s meeting, during which council members decided not the approve a $1.6 million events pavilion. Instead, city council directed Facilities Director Jerry Danforth to look into alternative designs which could improve suitability of the project for a wider variety of uses.

The move was spearheaded by Councilman Cole Stanley, who was worried that the city would regret limiting their possibilities if the design was built as proposed. The initial reason for the proposal was to provide shelter for stalls for the WRCA Rodeo, who have in the past erected large tents on the Santa Fe Depot grounds.

According to the posted agenda, the alternative proposal’s cost must not exceed $3 million.

City Council members are hoping that an improved design proposal will also allow the facility to be useful for a wider variety of purposes, including sports such as basketball and volleyball.

The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber in City Hall. Members of the public may sign up to speak at the meeting online on the city’s website or by calling the city secretary’s office at (806) 378-3014.
