Amarillo Animal Shelter and Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society Part Ways

The Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society, which has been located in the same building as the City of Amarillo’s animal shelter for decades, is parting ways with the shelter.

The APHS “historically had overseen adoption, rescue and TNR for the City's municipal shelter,” according to a statement from the organization. The statement also notes that, as the city has taken over adoptions and trap-neuter-return, APHS restructured “to focus solely on rescue, foster and transport.”

According to a statement released by the city, the shelter “is expanding its rescue partnerships with animal welfare organizations and groups.”

The statement from APHS also notes that they “will move to a new location, but continue to help with the severe over-population issues our community faces.” The statement was also frank about the need for donations during this transition, noting that the most immediate concern was “funds to purchase a heating/cooling unit for the indoor area we have to temporarily house animals between foster homes.”

The full statements from both the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society and City of Amarillo are included below, which include links to donate to the APHS and an email for rescue organizations looking to partner with the city.
