Voters hoping to get directly involved in attempts to repeal the controversial Civic Center expansion tax notes now have their opportunity. The Potter County Republican Party and Inspire Amarillo have announced times and places voters can sign a petition which could force an election to repeal the ordinance that passed the tax notes.
According to announcements from the two organizations, copies of the petition will be available to sign on Mondays through Fridays at the Potter County Republican Headquarters at 4217 SW Avenue from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and the Fairly Group at 1800 S Washington Suite 400 from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.
To sign the petition, you must be registered to vote in Amarillo.
As we have previously reported, the petition was filed with the City of Amarillo last week and is occurring in parallel but not officially connected with local businessman Alex Fairly’s lawsuit against the city. The two-day trial for the lawsuit is set to begin at 9:00 am on October 4th in Potter County District Court.
According to Inspire Amarillo, which is associated with Fairly, the petition got “over 300 signatures in the first few hours of the drive,” but noted that they “have a long way to go to get to 10,000,” which is the approximate number of signatures needed for the petition to be successful. According to a statement released by the Potter County Republican Party, the “goal is to acquire the necessary signatures by the end of August.”
