Former Amarillo City Councilwoman Elaine Hays is running for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Only, this time, she’s not running in Amarillo.

Hays, a financial planner who served on the Amarillo City Council for two terms, announced her candidacy on Tuesday for the Texas House District 64 seat. The seat, which is currently held by incumbent Rep. Lynn Stucky, includes Wise County and a portion of Denton County, both of which are in the vicinity of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

In a campaign video, Hays announced her candidacy by highlighting her roots in the area and her family’s decision to return to North Texas after she and her husband, Tracy, raised their family in Amarillo. According to Hays’ campaign website, she plans to focus on issues like enhancing Texas’ electrical grid and expanding religious liberty, among other topics.

With her announcement, Hays joins Stucky and software engineer Andy Hopper in the Republican race in House District 64. Hopper is also well-known in the area, having nearly unseated Stucky in his campaign for the seat in 2022. Hopper has already been endorsed by many leading figures in the conservative wing of the party, including Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The Republican primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
