Houston Voters to Decide Mayoral Race

Voters in Houston will begin casting their ballots tomorrow in a race to decide the next leader of Texas’ largest city.

In the race to replace Mayor Sylvester Turner, 15 candidates will be on the ballot. Of those 15 candidates, two candidates have garnered the most media attention: U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and State Sen. John Whitmire. Both Jackson Lee and Whitmire are currently elected to their offices as Democrats and are the only two candidates to have double-digit support in Houston, according to the latest poll from the University of Houston.

In the latest UH poll, Jackson Lee led the race with 30 percent, followed by Whitmire at 28 percent. Former Houston Metro chair Gilbert Garcia, former City Councilors Robert Gallegos and MJ Khan, and attorney Lee Kaplan were the only other candidates to earn more than 2 percent support in the poll.

Whitmire has been endorsed by the Houston Chronicle and a bipartisan coalition of Republican and Democrat elected officials. Meanwhile, Jackson Lee has been endorsed by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and several leading Democrat lawmakers.

According to polling, in the likely scenario of a runoff between Jackson Lee and Whitmire, Whitmire leads, 50-36 percent.

Early voting will begin Monday and run through Friday, November 3. Election Day is Tuesday, November 7. Any runoff, if necessary, will be held in December.
