Business owner Jamie Haynes filed for her place on the ballot in the House District 86 Republican primary on Wednesday.
Haynes announced she would be running earlier this year, challenging long-time incumbent John Smithee (R-Amarillo). Smithee has been in office since 1984. His current reelection bid has earned the backing of Governor Greg Abbott, Attorney Ken Paxton, Texas Right to Life, and Texas Alliance for Life. Smithee broke with other lawmakers in Austin to be one of the few who did not vote to impeach Paxton or to remove vouchers from an education reform bill.
According to her website, Haynes is running “to secure the border, protect local control, elevate education, protect Texas children, and enact term limits.” Haynes has been endorsed by Concerned Parents of Texas, Make Schools Safe Again, Texans United for Reform and Freedom, and Speak Up Texas, as several local leaders, former state house member Jeff Cason, former State Board of Education representative Jay Johnson, as well as state legislators from Oklahoma and Indiana.
House District 86 includes Randall County, as well as several other counties in the southern and western portions of the Texas Panhandle. The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is Monday, December 11th. The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th.
