This year, six candidates are running for seats on the Amarillo College Board of Regents. Among these candidates is a career educator who local voters would do well to place on the college board as an experienced advocate for education.

Jason Foglesong, a local high school teacher, is running for one of the three seats available this year on the AC Board of Regents. If Foglesong was to win one of the seats, he would be one of only two educators on the board, and the only individual on the board with any recent experience with classroom teaching.

As Foglesong has been noting on the campaign trail, his experience in local classrooms has made him aware of many of the challenges local students have been facing in getting prepared to enter college, whether at Amarillo College or a four-year institution. With this in mind, Foglesong has developed good ideas about how to make the jump from high school to college easier for students graduating from AISD schools with plans to attend Amarillo College.

In addition, Foglesong has also presented a hawkish attitude when it comes to keeping both taxes and tuition affordable for AC’s key stakeholders. Foglesong understands that one of AC’s biggest strengths is its affordability and that one of the college’s key roles is to provide higher education and important community services at a cost point that is affordable for the city as a whole. With this in mind, Foglesong has made it clear that, as a Regent, he will do everything possible to make sure that AC does not spend itself into a position where raising taxes or tuition becomes a necessity.

For these reasons, Foglesong stands out as one of the best candidates running for the AC Board of Regents this year. And Amarillo voters need to take a shot on Foglesong to be an experienced voice for education on the board.

We recommend Jason Foglesong for AC Board of Regents.

Election Day is May 6. Early voting begins on April 24.
