While most Amarillo voters who head to the polls for the May 6th election will only be voting to elect candidates to local office, voters in Highland Park ISD will be deciding whether or not to approve two bonds.

Proposition A asks voters to vote for or against a $129,000,000 debt issuance. Projects proposed under Proposition A at the primary Highland Park ISD location include the construction of a baseball field and a softball field, school safety features, buses, and fleet vehicles. Proposition A would also fund the construction of a new elementary school campus, career tech school, a school park and soccer field, roadways, utilities, and infrastructure at the new Buffalo Highlands development, located just north of the new Amazon Fulfillment Center.

Proposition B asks voters to vote for or against a $1,000,000 debt issuance to fund technology devices for students and staff.

In a video posted by the school district’s official YouTube channel, Highland Park Superintendant Jimmy Hannon stated that “Highland Park ISD is asking voters to two propositions on the May 6th ballot.”

A voter in the district who spoke with The Amarillo Pioneer took issue with Hannon’s framing of the issue, stating that “the district shouldn’t be asking voters to approve it. They should just tell voters much it will cost, what the money will be spent on, and let voters make up their own minds.” According to the district, if both bonds pass, the estimated property tax increase would be 21.27%.

Most of the information released by the district has referred to the items “Proposition 1” and “Proposition 2.” However, according to state law and confirmed by sample ballots released by Potter County, the items will be Proposition A and Proposition B.

Voters in Highland Park ISD will be choosing at least one new member of the school district’s board. Incumbents Cindy Spanel and Jennifer Sanchez are seeking reelection, while April Ferguson and Jessie Campolla are looking to join the board. Voters will use an at-large voting system to fill the three seats up for election. The winners of the election will serve four-year terms.

Early voting is April 24th through May 2nd. Election Day is May 6th.
