Incoming Canyon ISD Board Member Calls for Return 'to a Level of Civility’

Casey Posey, who was recently elected to Canyon ISD Board Place 3, has said he hopes “to get back to a level of civility” as the school district deals with controversy regarding comments made by board member Paul Blake.

At a campaign event, Blake, who was reelected unopposed to Place 1 earlier this month, referred to aspects of the LGBTQIA+ community as a “ perverse, degenerate, demonic thing that’s from the devil.” Following the incident, CISD Board President Bill Jenkins called for Blake to resign. There have also been reports of a planned lawsuit against Blake, as well as reports of petitions supporting and opposing Blake being circulated among students.

Posey did not offer any other comment or his personal position on Blake's remarks or Jenkins' request for Blake to resign. He is expected to be sworn in during a meeting of the board on May 15th.

The Amarillo Pioneer requested comment from other members and fellow member-elect Laurie Gilliland. The request for comment by current board members was redirected to the district's communications director. Gilliland has not responded as of publication.
