FACT CHECK: Defend Texas Liberty PAC is Not Funded by George Soros

A screenshot circulating on social media is being presented to imply that a political action committee backing Amarillo City Council candidate Les Simpson — Defend Texas Liberty PAC — is funded by George Soros. A simple fact check of this claim has proven that it is not correct.

The screenshot, in question, is of a contributor page from Transparency USA, a non-profit organization that aggregates and presents campaign finance data in a searchable form. However, the contributor page being circulated in the screenshot is not the page for Defend Texas Liberty PAC, and is actually the list showing the top contributors in Texas in the 2022 election cycle.

According to Transparency USA’s records, Soros contributed over $3.4 million to various candidates and organizations in 2022, with his top contributions being $1.9 million to Texas Justice & Public Safety PAC and $1.5 million to former gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. However, Soros did not make a single contribution to Defend Texas Liberty PAC.

For the 2022 election cycle, Defend Texas Liberty PAC reported raising $11.6 million, with the organization’s top contributions coming from Tim and Terri Dunn and Farris and JoAnn Wilks in the amounts of $7.15 million and $3.16 million, respectively.

Outside of supporting Les Simpson’s campaign for the Amarillo City Council, the group also backed City Council candidates Tom Scherlen and Josh Craft in the first round of the city elections in May. Other candidates backed by the group have included gubernatorial candidate Don Huffines, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare.
