City Granted Extended Deadline to Request Civic Center Rehearing

The deadline for the City of Amarillo to request a rehearing in the Civic Center lawsuit appeal has been extended by the Seventh Court of Appeals.

In their motion requesting the extension, lawyers for the city pointed to a number of other cases they are dealing with. The deadline was originally August 31st and is now September 29th.

As we previously reported, the city lost its appeal earlier this month. The lawsuit was originally brought by businessman Alex Fairly after the city attempted to issue tax anticipation notes to fund renovations to the Civic Center Complex in May of 2022. The city had previously sought to use bonds to fund the project, but the plan was rejected by voters in November of 2020.

Following a slate of Fairly-backed candidates being elected to Amarillo City Council earlier this year, it had been widely expected that the appeal would be the end of the case. However, the extended deadline doesn’t necessarily mean the city will seek a rehearing.
