The criminal case against actor Alec Baldwin has been revived, with a New Mexico grand jury formally charging him with involuntary manslaughter following prosecutors dismissing a similar charge in April last year.
The charge stem from the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust” in 2021. At the time, prosecutors cited new evidence for dropping the charge, though those charges appear to have been revived.
After the potential to revive the charge was first brought to a grand jury in October of last year, Baldwin’s lawyers released a statement saying that, “It is unfortunate that a terrible tragedy has been turned into this misguided prosecution.”
The new indictment includes two potential versions of an involuntary manslaughter charge. The first is involuntary slaughter involving the negligent use of a firearm, with the second version being involuntary manslaughter without due caution or circumspection.
The charges were filed in the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe. The new criminal case is D-101-CR-2024-00013, State v. Alexander (Alec) Rae Baldwin. The indictment can be downloaded here.
