The Amarillo Pioneer Editorial Board strongly recommends voting AGAINST the City of Amarillo’s Proposition C.

Proposition C would extend the terms of City Councilmembers to four years each. This would be the first time any terms have been extended in the history of our city.

We are strongly opposed to extending the terms of office for any elected position. For over a century, elected officials in Amarillo have made incredible impacts in their two-year terms. There really isn’t a strong argument for why the political landscape of 2024 greatly necessitates the need for four-year terms compared to, say, the political environment of 1924 or 1994.

In addition, we want to remind voters that Proposition C is virtually identical to 2020’s Proposition B, which was soundly rejected by voters. That time it was Ginger Nelson pushing it – this time it’s Cole Stanley. It doesn’t matter who the mayor is, they don’t need four-year terms.

Just say no. Our two-year term system is working fine and has worked fine for over 100 years. There’s no need to change it now.

Election Day is November 5th. Early voting begins on October 21st.

Please note: An editorial board recommendation does not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the Amarillo Pioneer’s advertisers or staff. A recommendation of one candidate does not represent a criticism of other candidates running unless otherwise stated. Recommendations may be offered in additional races.
