Cowboy Hats & Bowties: Silverman Talks Judicial Fashion

Heading into the Republican Party primary runoff, the fashion sense of one candidate for 108th District Court Judge has helped him stand out. Sam Brown Silverman could easily be spotted holding signs at the Santa Fe Building on Election Day, wearing his distinctive cowboy hat and bowtie outfit. Recently, we sat down with Silverman to discuss his look.

“I’ve been wearing bow ties for over 40 years now,” Silverman told The Amarillo Pioneer. “It started off when I was working as a clerk in college. That way the long tie would not get caught up in the files I was asked to sort or would not get caught up in the automatic paper feeder in the copy machine.”

Aside from practical applications, Silverman also noted that the style fits with his personality. “Bow ties don’t get in the way, they don’t become a napkin, they don’t go flying around. Given my personality, I like to keep things neat and to the point.”

As for his cowboy hat, Silverman says it reflects his Texas roots. “I’m a fourth generation Texan. My great-grandfather settled in Donley County in the 1870s.” Silverman also spoke to his ever-growing collection of cowboy hats.

“This is not a Stetson. This is a 20 X Resistol,” said Silverman about the hat he was wearing during the interview. Silverman said he will soon be switching to his straw hat for the summer.

Silverman placed second out of four candidates in the March 5th Republican Primary for 108th District Court Judge. Silverman will face fellow attorney Tim Pirtle in the May 28th runoff election.
