More Details About Charter Review Committee Revealed

During a work session meeting of Amarillo City Council held on Thursday Morning, Mayor Cole Stanley announced a more finalized version of the committee members who will undertake a review of the City Charter and propose amendments for a potential November election. The council also discussed the schedule and logistics of the meetings that will be held by the committee.

The list, which contains some slight changes from the list of finalists we reported last week, contains the following names:

Nominated by Mayor Cole Stanley:

  • Donna Ward

  • Michael Haning

Nominated by Councilman Josh Craft:

  • Sandra McCartt

  • Audrey Castillo

Nominated by Councilman Don Tipps:

  • Rodney Hill

  • Dean Crump

Nominated by Councilman Tom Scherlen:

  • Kim Benson

  • Toby Hudson

Nominated by Councilman Les Simpson:

  • Gary Pitner

  • Freda Powell

The committee will also include Councilmen Tom Scherlen and Les Simpson.

A tentative schedule for the committee will include an initial meeting on Thursday, May 30th, at 5:30 pm. The meetings will likely be held in Room 105 of City Hall, though those plans have yet to be finalized. The committee will then meet for the next five Thursdays. Unlike the 2020 charter review committee meetings, the meetings will be open to the public. Also unlike the 2020 committee meetings, the city does intend to publish agendas, though the agendas will likely be on a different page than typical agendas. The meetings will also be broadcast. (Mayor Cole Stanley encouraged the members of the council not on the committee to stay up to date by watching the meeting broadcasts.)

The council also discussed various proposals they would like to see studied. For a recap of those proposals, view our full story here.
