Q: Why did you decide to run for this office in 2021?
A: I have served six years as a regent, and hope to continue with the work of Amarillo College, including the improvements supported by the voters through the bond, opening of the Innovation Outpost, and improving the opportunities for all students to be successful at Amarillo College.
Q: If elected, what will be your top three priorities in office?
A: Provide good governance, work on updating our policies, and improving the success of our students.
Q: In what cases would you support efforts to raise property taxes? Please explain.
A: Property taxes are only one part of how Amarillo College receives funds, and we have kept those low for our local taxpayers. I believe the state funding approach of community colleges in Texas needs to be examined and rethought. I would support raising property taxes if the projected budget necessitated such action.
Q: What is an issue you believe has gone overlooked in your race and how will you address it if elected?
A: I don't know how to answer this, as the race hasn't really begun.
Q: Why are you the best candidate for voters to support for this position?
A: I am a passionate and committed public education advocate, and have worked hard as an elected official and in other volunteer roles for over 25 years at the local, state, and also national level, to plan for a better future. These efforts included improving alignment of education systems, building systems to increase levels of educational attainment by expanding access to education for all students, especially students in poverty, through innovative changes which are copied nationwide. I will continue to work on these issues, and as a regent, I can better focus on policies and practices that will continue to serve the community long after my term ends. I know Amarillo College will be key in helping our community build back after the challenges created by a global pandemic.
