Former Amarillo City Manager Jarrett Atkinson will be in charge of the City of Lubbock, following Lubbock's City Council meeting, on Thursday.
Atkinson will be taking charge of the City of Lubbock's operations, taking over for departing Lubbock City Manager James Loomis. The City Council of Lubbock voted unanimously to hire Atkinson on to take the job. Atkinson's official hiring follows Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope telling The Lubbock Avalanche Journal that Atkinson was the top contender for the position.
Atkinson served as Amarillo City Manager, until 2015. Atkinson's departure followed a controversy involving City Councilmember Mark Nair requesting Atkinson's resignation at a closed session meeting in June of 2015. Nair later apologized for the incident on Panhandle PBS.
Everythinglubbock.com reported that Atkinson will reportedly be paid a base salary of $250,000 as Lubbock City Manager. Atkinson's first day as Lubbock's new City Manager will be on December 12, 2016.
We will bring you more information about Atkinson's role in Lubbock, as it becomes available.
