State Representative Martinez Shot

Texas State Representative Armando "Mando" Martinez was shot in the head by a stray bullet, on Sunday, according to The Monitor.

Martinez, a state representative for District 39, was reportedly shot while watching fireworks with his family. Martinez told The Monitor that he had been celebrating the new year with family and friends at a residence outside of Weslaco. Martinez said while celebrating, they heard gunfire, which caused them to seek shelter in the garage.

Once gunfire had ceased, Martinez said that the group went back outside to watch fireworks. This was when he was shot.

Martinez described the feeling "like a sledgehammer hitting the back of my head." The state representative underwent a 45 minute surgery to remove the bullet.

Sheriff Eddie Guerra's office has launched a deadly conduct investigation into the shooting.
