A large Texas political group is saying that a candidate for speaker of the Texas House of Representatives may be serving as a placeholder for a campaign by a local representative.
Empower Texans, a major Texas political group, released information this month on Representative John Zerwas' campaign for Texas House Speaker. Zerwas (R-Richmond) announced his campaign for House Speaker earlier this month, on the same day that Speaker Joe Straus announced his retirement.
According to Cary Cheshire, of Empower Texans, it has been speculated that Zerwas is serving as a placeholder for a potential speaker bid by Representative Travis Clardy (R-Nacogdoches) or local Representative Four Price (R-Amarillo).
The Texas House will likely choose a speaker to replace Joe Straus before the start of the next legislative session in 2019.
