It's starting to get busy in the race for the next Speaker of the Texas House.
On Tuesday, it was announced Republican Dennis Bonnen (R-Angleton) would be joining the race for the Speakership. Bonnen’s entry into the race comes on the heels of a reported “secret meeting” between select Republican House members, the Texas Scorecard reported.
Prior to Bonnen’s entry, Representative John H. Zerwas withdrew from the contest. Zerwas (R-Richmond) filed immediately following Speaker Joe Straus’ retirement announcement, and some speculated he was serving as a “placeholder” for Amarillo Republican Four Price, who later filed for the job.
Currently, Bonnen, Price and Republicans Phil King, Tan Parker, Drew Darby, and Travis Clardy are vying for the Speaker’s gavel. Democrat Eric Johnson is also running.
House members will decide the fate of the job in the coming months.
