Road Crew Causes Gas Leak in Amarillo

Emergency crews were on scene gas leak in South Amarillo on Monday afternoon.

According to the Amarillo Fire Department, emergency crews were on scene at a gas leak on Monday afternoon. The gas leak, at 46th Avenue and South Georgia, was caused when a road construction crew accidentally cut a four inch gas line underneath Georgia Street.

Immediately following the report of the gas leak, Atmos Energy crews responded to the scene, as did crews from the Amarillo Fire Department. Amarillo emergency crews shut down traffic in the area.

Patients inside of the Georgia Manor Nursing & Rehab Center were also evacuated and moved to Amarillo Center for Skilled Nursing. Staff from the City of Amarillo and Amarillo Medical Specialists helped move the patients to the other facility. Approximately 57 patients were moved in the process. AFD officials say that the leak did not pose a health risk to the facility, but it caused the HVAC system to be shut down, limiting the cool air entering the facility.

Residents were transferred in ambulances and City of Amarillo buses.

During the late afternoon, the Amarillo Fire Department announced that the leak had been stopped and traffic was reopened. Atmos crews remained on scene making repairs overnight and the residents of the Georgia Manor Nursing & Rehab Center stayed at the Amarillo Center for Skilled Nursing.
