Nelson Says WRCA Contract Ending in 2018

Mayor Ginger Nelson has confirmed that the Working Ranch Cowboys Association's agreement to host the world championship rodeo in Amarillo will be ending in 2018.

In an email obtained by the Amarillo Pioneer, Nelson told a resident that the WRCA contract has one remaining year, meaning a rodeo will be hosted in 2018. Nelson says that beyond that rodeo, the City of Amarillo will discuss options with the WRCA for future events.

"We have confirmed with Sherman Bass that there is one more year left on the WRCA event contract," Nelson wrote in the email. "During next year the Civic Center will be working with WRCA to enter into a new contract for the rodeo."

According to the American Quarter Horse Association, 2017 marked the 22nd year that the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo was hosted in Amarillo. This year's rodeo featured 22 ranches from across the country and thousands of visitors from many different states.
