Political commentator and strategist Matthew Dowd announced today that he will not be a candidate for Texas' U.S. Senate seat, in 2018.
The Texas Tribune reports that Dowd had been considering an independent campaign to challenge Senator Ted Cruz, in 2018. Dowd, who has been critical of Senator Ted Cruz, ruled out the campaign in an interview with Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith today.
With Dowd's decision not to enter the race, the only two current candidates for U.S. Senate are Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Beto O'Rourke. Democratic U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro ruled out a Senate bid, last week. Republican U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul has not yet stated if he will run for Senate in 2018.
