Texas millionaire Gary Gates is rumored to be considering running for Texas Agriculture Commissioner.
Empower Texans put out an article last week saying that the word around the capitol is that Gates may run for Agriculture Commissioner against incumbent Republican Sid Miller in 2018. Gates has previously run for public office seven times in Texas. Gates most recently ran for Texas Railroad Commissioner, in 2016, finishing second in a runoff to now-incumbent Wayne Christian.
Commissioner Sid Miller weighed in on the report saying, "It appears that I'm going to be challenged in the GOP Primary by a seven-time loser who keeps throwing millions of dollars at his various attempts to try to buy an elected office....While we'll have all the money we need to get our message out, I have something even more powerful--a half a million members of TEAM MILLER, and that number continues to grow daily!"
Democrat Kim Olson is the only announced challenger to Miller, thus far.
The deadline to file for office in Texas ahead of the 2018 election is December 11th. Candidates may begin filing on November 11th.
