State Sen. Dawn Buckingham is considering becoming the second Republican to throw their hat into the ring in hopes of replacing outgoing incumbent Commissioner George P. Bush.
It was reported on Friday that Buckingham was considering launching the statewide campaign for Bush’s seat after the incumbent announced he would be challenging Attorney General Ken Paxton instead of seeking re-election. Buckingham’s spokesman, Matt Langston, said the Senator was "seriously considering" a bid for the office, according to the Texas Tribune’s Patrick Svitek. Additionally, Svitek later reported that Buckingham had begun running social media ads hinting at a possible campaign for the job.
If Buckingham joins the race, she would join Republican Weston Martinez, a former Texas Real Estate Commissioner, in the campaign to replace Bush. More candidates are expected in the coming months.
