Paint Removed After Ellwood Park Statue Vandalized

Red spray paint has been removed from a statue in Ellwood Park after it was vandalized over the weekend.

The controversial confederate monument in Ellwood Park, just west of downtown Amarillo, was painted over the weekend. It is not clear who painted the statue or when the incident occurred.

It has not been confirmed whether City crews removed the paint from the statue or if it was removed by an outside entity.

The incident occurred several weeks after two groups of citizens spoke to the Amarillo City Council regarding the statue. Several members of the group Indivisible Amarillo have been working to lobby for a relocation of the statue, while members of the Freedom Riders have been lobbying for the statue to stay.
