Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) in a statement released over the weekend.
In a statement, Thornberry blasted Schumer regarding the current government shutdown and said that Schumer and Senate Democrats were responsible for the failure to pass a finance bill to keep the government running.
"Senator Schumer and other Senate Democrats have decided to hold the military and the rest of the federal government hostage in order to try to get their way on an immigration issue," Thornberry said. "Each issue ought to be considered on its own merits, and it is absolutely wrong to make support for the men and women who are risking their lives for us conditional on any other issue."
Thornberry's statement was released Saturday morning after the U.S. Senate failed to pass a budget bill ahead of the midnight deadline on Friday. The federal government's non-essential actions are now effectively shut down until a spending bill can be passed.
