Man Dies Following Assault Near Downtown

One person has died following an assault that took place near downtown Amarillo.

According to information released today by the Amarillo Police Department, officers Thon Magor Achog, 39, died on December 29th after being assaulted behind the V&M Discount at 900 Southwest 10th Avenue. Officers found Achog dead in an alley behind V&M Discount. Achog appeared to have been dead for some time and had facial injuries and abrasions on his hands that led officers to believe that he had been involved in a physical fight prior to his death.

APD Special Crimes responded and found that Achog had been assaulted the previous afternoon in the same area. Following the assault, Achog was seen concious with other people behind the store.

Officers located the suspect who is believed to have assaulted Achog. Officers deffered the case to the 47th District Attorney's Office, which accepted charges of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury against Trever Lee Menzies, 32.

On January 3rd, APD PACE (ProActive Criminal Enforcement) officers located Menzies in the 2000 block of West 10th Avenue and arrested him. He was booked into the Potter County Detention Center. Justice of the Peace Richard Herman ordered an autopsy.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Special Crimes Unit at 378-9468 or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
