It’s going to be Padres baseball in Amarillo.
On Monday, Amarillo Professional Baseball announced the signing of a two-year deal between the local team and the San Diego Padres organization. This means Amarillo’s future baseball team is expected to be the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres organization through 2021.
“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with the San Diego Padres and officially bring professional, affiliated baseball back to the Texas Panhandle for the first time in 37 years,” Amarillo Professional Baseball President and General Manager Tony Ensor said in a statement. “We can't wait to welcome top-notch talent from the highest-rated farm system in baseball and introduce them to the best fans in Minor League Baseball.”
The Padres currently serve as the Double-A organization affiliate for the San Antonio Missions, which has moved its Double-A component to Amarillo in favor of receiving a Triple-A affiliation deal. In the 1970s, Amarillo was a Padres affiliate for seven seasons.
Baseball is expected to begin downtown in April.
