When Amarillo's new professional baseball team rides into town in 2019, the name of the team could be decided by you.
Amarillo Professional Baseball, the unnamed transition organization that will eventually become the professional team in Amarillo next year, is seeking the public's input on what the team should be called. Elmore Sports Group, the team's owner, announced the promotion on Wednesday morning, citing that the team will be the first minor league affiliated professional team in Amarillo since 1982.
Beginning on Wednesday, fans and residents can submit their idea for the team's name through amarilloprobaseball.com. Fans will be asked to explain their choice, citing originality, creativity, uniqueness, regional relevance, and appropriateness. The team names will be judged and the finalists released to the public for a vote. Whoever nominates the winning name could win an Amarillo baseball jersey, season tickets for the team's first season and a chance to throw out a pitch at a game.
Tony Ensor, general manager of the Amarillo Pro Baseball organization, said that this promotion will be a great thing for a "exciting time" in Amarillo.
“This is an exciting time for our Amarillo community and the team,” Ensor said in a statement. “I cannot think of a better way to welcome in a new era of Amarillo Professional Baseball than by having our residents and future fans help name the team. We are asking the community to join us in this rare opportunity to create an identity that will represent the heart and soul of Amarillo, the Panhandle and Minor League Baseball.”
Fans can submit their selections for the team's name until Friday, May 4th.
