House Republicans Unanimously Back Bonnen for Speaker

Dennis Bonnen has cleared the caucus hurdle in his campaign to become the next Speaker of the Texas House.

This week, the Texas Scorecard reported Bonnen was unanimously recommended by the House Republican Caucus to become the next Speaker. Bonnen’s unified support puts him as the clear front runner to replace the retiring Speaker, Joe Straus.

An Angleton Republican, Bonnen was praised by Lubbock Republican Dustin Burrows, who said he looks forward to working with Bonnen during the upcoming legislative session.

“Texas House Republicans have full faith in Representative Dennis Bonnen as he has committed his speakership to supporting and empowering our members of the Texas House so they may dutifully represent the values and principles of their districts,” Burrows said.  “As a unified caucus behind Representative Bonnen, we are prepared to get to work on January 8th.”

While Bonnen appears to be the only Speaker candidate with an ongoing campaign, several other candidates have not yet officially withdrawn from the race. Amarillo Republican Four Price and fellow Republicans Travis Clardy, Phil King and Tan Parker have not yet withdrawn officially, but are not actively challenging Bonnen.
