City Council Unanimously Approves Paid Parking Plan

Amarillo City Councilmembers approved a paid parking plan for downtown during a second reading on Tuesday.

According to information released by the City of Amarillo, members of the Amarillo City Council voted to begin charging for parking in downtown beginning in January. Councilmembers had previously approved a deal with an outside contractor to handle the payments for parking.

The boundaries of the plan for paid parking will run from Southeast 3rd Avenue to the north, South Johnson to the east, Southeast 10th to the South and South Taylor to the west. Paid parking will be enforced through 5PM, Monday through Friday and will run $1 per hour. Motorists will be allowed three hours in a single space before being required to move to a different spot. Parking will not be enforced on city holidays.

Cash will not be an accepted payment for parking. Instead, drivers will be asked to pay through a cellphone app, using PayPal, a linked bank account, a debit card, or a pre-paid debit card for non-banked users.
