WTAMU Students Hosting Health Fair

Nursing students from West Texas A&M University will host the biannual WTAMU Health Fair 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at Generation Next Worship Center in Amarillo.

Recognizing the great need for quality health care in the community, fair organizers and contributors will coordinate free health screenings including body mass index, blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and more. Consultations will be in various areas of the building to ensure privacy and confidentiality.

“We bring this event together for individuals who do not have health care available. It’s so important to have annual exams to make sure you’re in good health and to practice preventative care. Last semester, the fair was able to help someone identify very high blood pressure, which could have prevented a stroke,” Kate Martin, senior nursing major, said.

In addition to providing screenings, the health fair is a source of information about medical services and other resources offered in the Amarillo community. There will be vendors providing clothing, hygiene supplies, food and haircuts for attendees. Open to all ages, the fair will have face painting and kid-friendly activities as well.

“The health fair project allows students to incorporate knowledge in areas of chronic illness and preventative care to provide community education and screenings. This project is a culmination of many hours of planning and collaboration with many local agencies to reach those underserved in our community,” Priscella Correa, instructor of community health, said.

“With our class of 36, it’s been a good team effort with the community, but we’re always in need of more volunteers,” Martin said. “Come join us! Eat, share healthful information and help us assist people. We’re looking forward to a great turnout.”
