Houston Police Sue to Stop Voter-Approved Firefighter Pay Increase

A judge has issued an order in Houston blocking the implementation of voter-mandated pay increases for firefighters, as a group supporting police officers has filed a lawsuit.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Judge Kristen Brauchle Hawkins has issued a temporary restraining order to prevent the implementation of voter-approved pay increases for firefighters, due to a lawsuit filed by the Houston Police Officers Union against the city and the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association. The lawsuit seeks to stop the pay increases, saying it would create a financial burden on the City of Houston that could impact emergency services.

The passage of Proposition B for Houston firefighters in the November election was opposed by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Voters still approved the measure, 59 percent to 41 percent.
