Firefighter Association Suing Houston Mayor

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner is facing a new lawsuit brought by the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association.

According to the Texas Scorecard, this week, the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association filed a lawsuit against Turner and Houston City Councilman Dave Martin, alleging “misuse of public funds and public resources for political advertising against a Charter Amendment."

The lawsuit was brought forth following a meeting of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Martin. During the meeting, the Committee invited witnesses to give opinions on the impact of a firefighter petition seeking voter approval of a pay parity issue between the Houston Fire Department and the Houston Police Department.

Following the filing of the lawsuit, Turner responded on the Houston Matters radio show, stating that he did not view an issue with the meeting that took place.

“All of those committee hearings are put on the website for the general public to see, for people who are concerned about transparency,” Turner said.

The petition is expected to soon be placed on a City Council agenda, which could place it on a ballot for voters to decide.
