Christ Church Camp Advocates Protest at City Hall

Advocates for the Christ Church Camp of New Beginnings assembled outside of Amarillo City Hall on Tuesday to protest before the regularly scheduled meeting of the Amarillo City Council.

On Tuesday, residents and advocates of the Christ Church Camp of New Beginnings gathered outside of City Hall with banners and signs, calling for the City of Amarillo to stop proceedings against the camp. As we reported on Monday, Kip Billups, vice president of the Christ Church Camp of New Beginnings, stated that the City of Amarillo planned to begin fining the organizers of the camp up to $12,000 every day after March 1st, if the camp is not disbanded.

Activists gathered on the steps of City Hall in hopes of being heard by City staff and the members of the Amarillo City Council. In addition to those gathered, senate candidate Victor Leal also joined protesters and stated that he hoped a solution could be found to the current issues with the City of Amarillo. Green Party state legislative candidate H.F. "Rusty" Tomlinson was also at the protest.

The Christ Church Camp of New Beginnings is located near Southwest 1st Avenue and Washington Street in Amarillo and serves as a camp for many members of Amarillo's homeless population. The group says its goal is to show the love of Christ to those who live at the camp, while also provided necessities such as food, clothes and shelter.
