Castro Backs Valdez in Governor's Race

Joaquin Castro, a Democratic U.S. Congressman from San Antonio, has announced his intention to back former Dallas County sheriff Lupe Valdez in her bid for governor.

Castro announced his support of Valdez in a prepared statement released on Monday. In the statement, Castro said he intended to support Valdez, as she was the candidate most likely to defeat incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in 2018.

Valdez, 70, is one of nine Democrats running for the opportunity to race the Republican nominee in November. In addition to Valdez, several candidates with name recognition are also running. Those candidates include: Houston businessman Andrew White, retired teacher Grady Yarbrough, Dallas businessman Jeffrey Payne and former congressional candidate and hospice owner Tom Wakely.

Abbott is facing two opponents, teacher Barbara Krueger and secessionist Larry SECEDE Kilgore in the Republican primary race.

Voters will decide both parties' contests on March 6th. A runoff, if necessary, will be held in May.
