Governor Greg Abbott has ordered Texas law enforcement officials to investigate packages that have been sent to Texans over the past two weeks that contained explosive devices.
In a statement from the Texas Governor's office, Abbott announced the release of $265,000 in emergency funding to the Austin Police Department and the Texas Ranger Bomb Response Team to investigate package bombings in Austin. The money is earmarked for the agencies to purchase seven portable x-ray systems to assist in bomb squad response and investigation.
“I want to ensure everyone in the Austin region and the entire state that Texas is committed to providing every resource necessary to make sure these crimes are solved as quickly as possible,” Abbott said in a statement. “I offer my sincere thanks to law enforcement at the local, state and federal level for their efforts to ensure that those responsible for these attacks are apprehended and brought to justice.”
The move comes as four explosions have taken place in Austin over the past few weeks after explosives were mailed to residents. According to the Texas Tribune, Austin Police have described the unknown perpetrator as a "serial bomber."
