Members of the Amarillo City Council are considering giving a final approval to an ordinance changing existing rules on gun ranges in Amarillo.
Amarillo's City Council is considering giving final approval on Tuesday to an ordinance that will change some zoning regulations regarding shooting ranges, while also adding rifles and "other firearms" to the definition of weapons allowed inside of a shooting range. Councilmembers gave the proposal an initial approval on Tuesday with all four councilmembers, except Eddy Sauer, giving approval to the resolution. Sauer left the dais at the time of the vote and returned for the following agenda item.
The change drew some criticism from those in attendance on Tuesday. Edith DiTomasso, an Amarillo resident, asked the City Council to vote against the resolution, for fear of bump stocks being included in the definition of "other firearms." Other residents spoke favorably for the change, saying it would allow more freedom for sportsman relating to shotguns and other such rifles.
In addition to the ordinance change, the City Council is also considering approving several rezoning ordinances and the purchase of engineering services from Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., in the amount of $2,577,500. The approval of the engineering deal will add $78,000 to that budget, for the $2.58 million total.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at Amarillo City Hall (509 Southeast 7th Avenue). The meeting will be held at 5pm.
