Amarillo City Council Considering Final Approval on Parking Issues

The Amarillo City Council will vote next week on a final approval of issues related to parking in downtown Amarillo.

On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on establishing penalties for failing to pay a parking ticket incurred by use or failure to use the City’s new parking system downtown. Original penalties will be set at $25, with possible increases up to $1,000, depending on the circumstances of the violation, or failure to pay a violation.

Council will also consider voting to approve the creation of an office of civil administrative hearings and process, with the goal of “adjudicating certain motor vehicle violations as nuisances.” This item includes an additional piece to provide for the “impoundment of any vehicle that has been the subject of six or more civil nuisance violations within the prior twelve months, or a sum of 5300 or more is past due on unpaid civil penalties.” Other actions could also be taken, such as placing a hold on a vehicle’s registration.

Council members will meet on Tuesday, March 26th in the Council Chambers of Amarillo City Hall (601 South Buchanan). The meeting will begin at 1PM, following a noon public comment session.
